Slow Down To Speed Up
Jeff J Hunter's post-presentation lesson was simple enough to remember and hard enough to practice: founders cannot win the AI race by pushing harder on square wheels.
After speaking at the AIpreneurs Mastermind in Malibu, Jeff described the pattern he sees everywhere: a business is rolling on square wheels, watching competitors with round AI-enabled wheels pass by, then saying, "I do not have time to change my wheels."
That is the trap. The company is busy, but the busyness is protecting the bottleneck. AI makes the contrast harder to ignore because the businesses that pause long enough to rebuild their operating system suddenly start moving with less friction.
In the room: Jeff speaking on why AI + human businesses scale only when leaders slow down long enough to rebuild how work moves.
Speed is not the same as progress.
A founder can add tools, hire help, attend events, buy software, and still be dragging the same old operational cart. The wheels are still square if every task still depends on the founder to remember, prompt, check, follow up, approve, and rescue.
The round wheel is not "more AI." The round wheel is a cleaner operating system: documented work, trained human ownership, AI-assisted production, quality control, and a clear standard for what done right looks like.
Most teams are trying to accelerate the wrong machine.
AI does not fix a broken workflow by itself. It just makes the broken workflow produce more raw output.
Busy, reactive, founder-dependent
- AI tools create drafts, but nobody owns the next step.
- Tasks live in Slack, inboxes, voice notes, memory, and scattered docs.
- The founder is still the QA department, project manager, and escalation path for everything.
- The team says they are too busy to document, delegate, or rebuild.
Documented, delegated, AI-assisted
- The business knows which outcome should happen without the founder.
- AI prepares the first pass inside a defined workflow.
- A trained VA or operator owns communication, follow-up, CRM updates, and quality checks.
- The founder approves standards and exceptions instead of babysitting every step.
What changing the wheels actually looks like
This is not a dramatic rebuild. It is a disciplined pause around one recurring bottleneck at a time.
Name the recurring drag
Pick the work that keeps stealing founder attention: inbox triage, meeting follow-up, CRM cleanup, content repurposing, lead response, client updates, or proposal prep.
Define what done right means
Capture the standard, examples, approval rules, risk points, and the exact moment a human operator should escalate instead of guessing.
Let AI prepare the first pass
Use AI for summarizing, drafting, researching, organizing, classifying, and creating structured options so the operator starts with leverage.
Assign human ownership
A trained VA turns AI output into shipped work: messages sent, CRM updated, tasks followed up, clients informed, and loose ends closed.
Debug and duplicate
Review what broke, tighten the instructions, improve the examples, then move the next bottleneck onto better wheels.
AI gives you leverage
It turns blank pages into drafts, long calls into summaries, messy inputs into options, and repetitive decisions into structured starting points.
Humans make it land
Operators understand context, communicate with people, protect the brand, handle exceptions, and make sure work actually ships.
Workflow makes it repeatable
The documented system turns one good execution into a process that can improve, transfer, train, and compound over time.
"We do not have time" is usually the square wheel talking.
If a team cannot pause for the work that removes the bottleneck, the bottleneck is already running the company.
That is why the AI + human model matters. AI alone can make a founder feel productive while creating more things to review. Human labor alone can get buried in manual work. But AI plus trained human operators, inside a documented workflow, gives the business a way to move faster without turning the founder into the wheel repair department.
